El 5 de mayo es una fecha significativa en la historia de México y de América también: en primer lugar la Batalla de Puebla que marcó la victoria de las fuerzas del Ejército Mexicano comandado por Benito Juárez, presidente en México entre 1858 y 1872, contra uno de los más poderosos y capacitados como lo fue el de la potencia francesa dirigido por el emperador Napoleón III Bonaparte.
Y por otro lado la derrota de Imperio Francés, la cual truncó los objetivos de extender la monarquía hasta Centro y Sudamérica para proveer de materia prima y comercio a Europa.
En 1861 debido a la inestabilidad financiera, causada por la guerra mexicano-americana, el Congreso Mexicano acordó suspender los pagos de la deuda exterior durante dos años.
Los acreedores en Europa (Inglaterra, España y Francia) decidieron que la intervención sería la mejor manera de cobrarse la deuda. Más tarde, Inglaterra y España lograron negociar por la vía diplomática los términos y condiciones en los que se pagaría la deuda posteriormente.
Mientras que Napoleón III, gobernante de Francia, decidió invadir México para establecer una monarquía favorable a Europa. Con ese fin, debía disolver el Gobierno Constitucional Juárez y colocaría a un rey que respetara su autoridad, eligiendo para ello a Maximiliano de Habsburgo, quien no pudo aspirar al trono del Imperio Austro-Húngaro.
El Presidente Juárez le dio la orden al General Ignacio Zaragoza de detener el avance de las fuerzas armadas francesas en los fuertes de Loreto y Guadalupe cerca de la ciudad de Puebla.
Y el 5 de mayo de 1862, los cañones resonaron y los rifles dispararon y más de mil soldados franceses cayeron muertos. Los mexicanos habían ganado la batalla. Maximiliano finalmente fue derrotado y capturado el 15 de mayo de 1867; fue juzgado por una corte marcial y ejecutado por una escuadra de fusilamiento el 19 de junio de ese mismo año.
